I glanced at Captain Falstaff and then back at Leroy before responding. “That’s…that’s just terrific! What did he say’ I mean did he talk about what happened on the highway?”
“Unfortunately he didn’t get to say anything. Deputy Jeff Cole spotted on of the cars owned by Riley Manning as it was headed through town. Deputy Cole followed the car; there was a chase and then a gun fight, which the bad guy lost.”
“Who was he?” Joe asked.
“The name on his license and other papers we found in his wallet identified him as Mr. Guido Carbone – he has a Memphis address,: Chip answered.
“Did you find anything interesting in the car; I mean was there something that might offer any clue about the why and what for?” My surprise was showing.
“Nothing,: Leroy answered hurriedly, then giving a glance at Captain Falstaff before continuing. “We just surmise that he had an unfortunate accident and wrecked that Lincoln in the Hatchie Bottom. Trooper Helms came along to investigate, and for reasons, we’ll probably never know, he killed Helms and then Riley Manning when he stopped to help. He stole Manning’s car and…well he was driving that car when Deputy Cole spotted him.
