An Excerpt from “Backwoods Brief” by Aaron R. Roberts

Foreword
I am not a certified expert, but I will try to provide you with the best possible essentials in which I’ve either done myself or consulted my friends. Even then, we don’t claim to have perfected or know everything. We still make mistakes just like the next person. The bug out bag material talked about isn’t intended as Gospel truth. You owe it to yourself and your loved ones to do your own due diligence and come to your own conclusions. Your bug out bag will not automagically save your life. It is intended to help you survive a bug out condition if it faces you in the face. If you don’t learn how to use your items effectively then it is like you have nothing at all. You need to try the items you pack and often practice using them on a regular basis. All of the bug out bags in the world combined won’t be able to help you if you don’t know how to use the items in your pack. There is always a use for it after you build it. We live in a society where not having a well prepared bag is like not having one at all. If you don’t have one you should be asking yourself why not. This is not a fad, nor a hobby. If you believe that it is either, you’ll be all that much better off as a result. It’s a way of life. With as much unrest in the world can you afford to be without a bug out bag? Some experts recommend having duplicates of all items. Such as Shelter Fire & water, in different sized kits; on key rings, in specialized pocket kits, belt pouches, belt packs, day packs, and backpacks. The best essential item to have is a level head on your shoulders. The ability to be patient is a skill that will be crucial. Lighting fires and finding food are not skills we use every day. Being patient will be your most valuable asset. The most we hunt for food are the specials on sale at our local grocery. It is not something that is as important as it once was. Being impatient can lead to mechanical injuries that could lead to bigger problems. As for lighting fires we just turn a switch or push a button. The skills necessary to use and store your items correctly to avoid personal injury or waste are a must. To use this equipment that you define necessary to your advantage only comes with experience. For example first aid training is more important than simply carrying a first aid kit. Matches are useless if you don’t have experience finding dry wood in wet conditions. Practicing map and compass skills are vital to being able to use them to navigate…and so on. Hopefully with this information you will be on your way to actually building a bag of your own. I also want to add I will be using the word “you” and “so” a lot. I have mine so you can make yours. So as you read this keep an open mind. ALL that is included in this material has been done to some degree; either by me or one of my friends on a regular basis. To make and to make again is the only way to master these skills. To perfect the way you want it done. The way you are familiar with the items you make and take will determine if you just survive or thrive. There are factors that define who we are and what we do. These factors play a part of our everyday life. We wouldn’t leave the house without putting on a pair of pants or shorts; this is no different. We wouldn’t go into a business meeting without making notes on what we are debating. You wouldn’t let your kids go to school without having them prepare for the test to help them on their way. This is no different. You look at the horizon and it is not the same one our older generation faced. We are faced with be prepared or be scared. There is a term floating around the viral waves. It is the acronym F.E.A.R. It is the first letters of the words forget everything and run. I put this before you as a tool to make you aware that you can do this. SO as little or as much as you can do will only make you that much closer to being self-aware that you can succeed and depend on yourself. We can sit back and watch other people do this on television, we can read books, but if we don’t put that knowledge to use then we fail. All of the knowledge in the world is void if you don’t do something with it. Onward from this point the motivation is there and it is up to you to act on it. If we had no hope – for a cure, for winning the lottery, for falling in love, for the end of war, for being free of abuse, or for having food, warmth, clothing, and shelter – we would have no reason to go on. What you hope for doesn’t matter, but rather the essence of hope itself. Bernie Siegel
