Short Excerpt and 5-Star Review for “Daytona Dead” by Karen Vaughan

daytona dead 2

Gerry came out of the bathroom smelling and looking great. He reached into the closet for one of his shirts that screamed I AM A TOURIST. I wrinkled my nose disapprovingly. “What?”
“That shirt screams I want to get robbed.”
“Laura, cookie, so do half the tourists with what they wear. Besides I spent a mint on new clothes for the trip, as per your request. I left my ratty jeans and holey t-shirts at home, so I could look good for two weeks out of my life.”
“Okay, point taken, I guess we can risk it for one night.”
If there was one place on earth, you could wear a loud shirt and not look tacky it was Florida.

5-Star Review by By C. W. Lovatt

Quite an Enjoyable Read!
This review is from: DAYTONA DEAD (Kindle Edition)
Fast paced, and a laugh a minute, Karen Vaughn’s Laura and Gerry’s mystery series continues on without pausing for breath…although she does allow the reader time for a quick bite and a dip in the ocean before a dalliance in the bedroom. But then it’s all giggles and mayhem when the clues begin to surface. Quite an enjoyable read.

DEAD ON ARRIVAL CONVERSATIONS BETWEEN LAURA & GERRY CHAPTER 1
“Okay Gerry,” I said, “cut the crap! How did you get Velcro’s’ body in here?”
“What do ya mean how? You mean you think I did this, thanks a lot!” he said, somewhat pissed.
“This wasn’t your handy-work?”
“No! Why would you think I would do such a horrid thing?”
“Not sure really; maybe because you and Ray have the only keys besides me, and you love practical jokes.”

Enforcer Book 4 of the Princes of prophecy series by L Ann Marie

4 Enforcer ront.jpg

ABOUT ENFORCER
Sheila grew up in the MC. Adopted by a biker family she was always just another Brother. She’s trained for High Security and moves with the Princes when they take their new town and place within the MC Chapter. As a jack of all trades, Sheila is the Princes go to Brother. She gets the job done and can comfort the victims when needed. To her Club she’s invaluable. To Sheila,it’s just another day. Seeing everyone around her growing up and moving on, she realizes her past may be holding her down. When her past threatens to take the job she loves and Club she would give her life for, she jumps at the chance for help. Going it alone isn’t easy, but she’s Sheila.
Jax left Family Security with the MC when a teenage girl started showing interest in him. He knew it was only a matter of time before he lost control with her and put his life on the line. Badass Bikers are known for doling out justice their way. Seeing her on the list for the new Club he figures five years is long enough. It’s time to grab a taste of that forbidden fruit, that is if she doesn’t kill him first.
Since joining Tiny’s family she’s always been one of the Brothers. As one of the Officers and HS of the newly formed Princes, she has proven her abilities time and time again. She’s a comforter, a protector, an enforcer. And since her attack, she’s been untouched.
Jax was sent to school by MC, was part of Family Security then went Nomad. Now part of the Princes, he decided to let his girl know he’s not waiting anymore. The question is – can he break through the wall and get to the soft interior he knows is there? His concern – Will she shoot him before he gets that chance?
AN EXCERPT: JAX
“I’m going to need someone full time if I keep getting pulled into Ops.”
He looks at me for a couple of seconds. “Are you looking to go back on Ops full time?”
Am I? I think about Sheila and Stella. I like how things are working right now. “Not yet.” He nods smiling.
Jessie, Eliza, Dakota, Sheila and Taylor come in. Sheila slides a grinder toward me. “Thanks, Bella.” I know it’s an Italian.
She laughs. “No fuckin’ way.”
I eat while Prez gives us our jobs and we go over the maps and movements of each team. Looks easy enough. We get our guns and ammo and I kiss my girl before we get our helmets on. “Why isn’t Eliza running?”
She waves her hand. “She got shot earlier and Prez sidelined her.” She’s not happy with this.
“She got shot earlier.” I need to make sure I heard her right, it was an offhanded comment.
She looks at me. “Yeah flesh. Pussy shot through the door.”
“Where were you?”
“Shooting the pussy.” She puts her helmet on and starts her bike.
I shake my head. They’ve been running all day and she’s already killed a man. She went to eat and came back like it’s an ordinary day and her partner gets shot. I fuckin’ love her. Eliza asks for check-in and we all respond. The whole way there I’m thinking about Sheila and how this all happened. She’s a Brother through and through, but her sweet is so fuckin’ deep.
It takes less than an hour to get the house clear of people then Dakota blows it up. Fire has been hosing the grass and trees the whole time. We’re called back to Security and told to go to the Club. I look at Sheila not sure what to do. “Jess has her.”
I nod as we pick up our clean guns. I guess we’re going to the Club. I can’t get the thought out of my head. I’ve never felt this way and Patches’ lists don’t cover talking to your woman unless you’re in bed.
I hold her hand walking in the Club. She asks if I’m okay and I smile at her wondering if I am. Dakota laughs behind me. “He is wondering if you are all in too.”
My head snaps around. I can’t believe he just fuckin’ said that. She squeezes my hand and I look at her. “Yes.” She pulls me through the door and Dakota laughs. Holy shit!
“Wait!” I stop her and wait for the fuckin’ nosy bastard to walk by. He laughs slapping my shoulder. “Yes you’re all in? I’m trying to figure out what the fuck I’m feeling and you’re all in?”
She looks at me and I think she’s going to hit me. “If it’s a fuckin’ problem for you either get over it or walk away.”
She turns, but I don’t let her go. I lean down. “It’s not every fuckin’ day I’m hit with this. I love you are not words I say. Give me a fuckin’ minute to get it and we’re good. Throwing bitch at me isn’t the way to handle this and you are not walking the fuck away. All in means you find the common ground and deal.”

ABOUT L. ANNMARIE
L. Ann started with the Baxters and is working on her third series, The Princes of Prophecy MC. While her books feature ex-SEALs and Badass Bikers, L. Ann is writing about the strong women that these men need in their life to help right the worlds wrongs and help keep their small part of the world safe. The women are extraordinary, strong and determined to make a difference.
The men fight for right in every book. Yes they kill people. Yes they shoot at the bad guys feet to cause them pain. Yes they throw tampons at each other regularly.
That being said, they do these things while stopping human trafficking, bringing their Club into legitimate businesses, fight gangs to keep drugs away from their town and kids, keep women sheltered safely while trying to stop domestic abuse. These are men that don’t leave a Brother behind. They don’t treat women as possessions and they don’t cheat. Respect takes on an honorable meaning. Women and kids are cherished. Everyone is looked out for.
L. Ann has made the perfect Club, tackled the taboo subjects and made it easy to imagine living in a world where your protection comes from the SEALS and Bikers.
With readers writing about rereading the series over and over, she feels like she’s told her characters stories in a way that would make them proud.
Every book will make you laugh, every book will make you angry for the wrong that happens in the world. Every book will make you cry for the pain that a character feels.
Don’t take my word for it. Pick one up and try it out. The Baxters book 1 is FREE. MC Book 1 is FREE. (on SW or through my website) Give them a shot and Happy Reading!

“Dead Men Don’t Swing is a bitingly funny, deliciously bawdy and fast-paced murder mystery in which “death by sexual misadventure and a wayward poisonous snake” (among other things) make for pure entertainment gold.”

Excerpt

Prologue
The woman was dressed in a satin negligee and a pair of four inch spiked heels. She wasn’t wearing much else. She awaited her lover for their usual afternoon together. Her husband was a fortune five hundred financier who was never home. She spent the majority of her time going from man to man in the buildings social club. What a crock that was; everyone knew that it was free sex for a bunch of horny people. Some did partner swapping; others like her trolled the other singles and did a few threesomes. She disgusted herself but this beat popcorn and movie night with the cat.
Her lover was knocking at the door. It was time to launch into the grand seduction and move the affair to the next level to exclusivity. She was tired of catting around with countless men. Denny was full time material. She intended on asking Weldon for a divorce and would commit to Denny full time. The sex was great. He wasn’t much of a stud but he did keep in shape. Not bad for someone who was for all practical purposes, balding prematurely. At least he wasn’t a troll with a comb over.
She strode to the door, opened it and struck a sexy pose.
“Come on in big boy. I have something special planned.”
“Forget that. We need to talk.”
She looked at him and saw that he was quite serious. “You’re right, Dennis we do need to talk!
“I have something I need to tell you. I am divorcing Weldon so we can be together.”
“You what?” Denny felt like he wanted to puke. This was just meant as a bit of fun. He wanted to end it and she was talking love and marriage. After the first one with Nancy tanked he was determined to stay foot-loose.
“I’m getting rid of the old bore.”
He started pacing and looked agitated.
“That’s what you want isn’t it? The woman was sitting on the edge of the couch looking at him imploringly.
“No Melissa, that’s not what I want. I came to tell you that I want out. I have decided to stop going to the social club.
“Well that’s good, I am quitting too. We can have a real relationship.”
“You don’t get it. I don’t want one, not with you.”
Melissa stood up and excused herself and headed for the ladies room. She refused to let him see her cry.
Denny hated weepy women. He made his way out to the balcony and was looking at the skyline and waited for the woman to compose herself. It seemed like awhile but then he heard her approaching. He turned to see her dressed in a leather corset still sporting the heels.
“Melissa I told you it’s over.”
“Look loser, it’s over when I say it’s over.”
He looked closer and saw that she had a bullwhip in one hand and a colt 45 in the other.
“The way I see it, Dennis you have two choices. Strip or die! Melissa was cracking the whip as she waved the gun at him.
She’s got more talent than I thought she had. There I thought she couldn’t walk and chew gum at the same time. If his life weren’t being threatened at the time, this could be a real turn on.
“Start stripping or I start shooting.”
He started removing his clothes before bullets started flying. He was down to the boxers when she took off one of her heels. What Denny didn’t know was that she had a gift with throwing stars, as she had learned from a knife thrower at the circus. With careful aim she hit her target and he went over the balcony. His scream died just as he hit something solid.

Review by  C. Giguere

I was surprised several times by this book and that’s hard to do to this reader these days. Karen Vaughan has cleverly weaved a murder mystery that had me thinking I knew what was about to happen. “Dead Men Don’t Swing” is an easy and entertaining read in which a married woman kills her lover who decided to dump her. Of course Laura Fitzpatrick is the one to discover the body and is thrown straight into the melee of murder, swingers and insane tenants.
Laura has become a likeable character and though you do need to suspend disbelief in some of these situations, it’s still a fun read. I do have to warn you not to get too overconfident like I did as the story reached its climax. I thought I was about to seriously disappointed in the ending and I wasn’t. So here’s my take, if you need to be entertained this is the book for you.

“Over Her Dead Body” by Karen H. Vaughan

over her dead body.jpg

Leena looked at me with derision again. “Who’s the floozy?” she sneered. I was seeing red and Sandy’s face was turning a similar color. “Floozy?” I spluttered. I wanted to scratch her eyes out, but I refused to succumb to the base temptation to beat the broad senseless. Sensing an impending catfight Gerry rushed to my side. Sandy looked at his wife sternly. “Leena that was tasteless and crass,” he admonished her, “you will apologize to Laura. How dare you defame this funeral of my dear friend Ethel by insulting this lovely girl?” “Girl my ass,” Leena snarled, “she’s gotta be at least 35.” If Gerry hadn’t held me back I would have bitch-slapped her into next week. Okay so I was almost 35; but that wasn’t the point. Sandy was livid. “I apologize for my wife’s bad behavior. I had better take her out of here.” He handed me one of his cards and said he would be back in a few days most likely without his spouse.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Just Love Karen Vaughan’s Writing!
I love this author’s writing! This is my second Karen Vaughan read, the first having been “Daytona Dead.” Ms. Vaughan has a dry, sense of humor, and it’s mixed with murder and mayhem. “Over Her Dead Body” is told in the first person and captured me from the very first page. I’m not going to say another word about the plot for fear of spoiling the enjoyment for other readers. The cast of characters is quirky and typically, Karen Vaughan’s.
Among other parts of this novel I loved, are segments such as the following, “I see myself as a survivor, and aside from the spate of exploding vehicles in our parking lot last spring, I can survive quite well in my neighborhood. My basic point is that I can’t tell mom that there was a death in our building. If I do, she’ll be all over me like a dirty shirt.”
What more can I say. Five-stars and highly recommended to anyone who loves crime and mystery.

Animals and golf – not your usual combination. I once played golf with my slugs… Still for budding young Tiger Woods or Rory McIlorys out there this is a lovely way to get into the game and learn a few things as well as enjoy cute illustrations of various African wildlife.
