An excerpt from “Dead Men Don’t Swing” by Karen Vaughan

dead men dont swing 3

Outside the precinct Missy Sawyer was decked out in a wig and shades, driving a dark blue Dodge Caravan. She hadn’t heard of any warrants for her arrest as yet but seeing her loving husband exiting the police division confirmed her suspicions that he was indeed planning to throw her under the bus. “Support, my ass!” The old bastard had no plans of standing by her in her time of need.
“Lying bastard!” she screamed internally. She was tempted to run his highly strung ass over, but she was in deep enough shit over the whole Denny debacle. Missy should nail the old bugger for alienation of affections in the divorce she knew Weldon was planning.
It was all Weldon’s fault she had strayed really. The fool could no longer get a rise out of the little soldier. She had suggested Viagra and Cyalis to help out their lackluster sex life. He was too proud to go to a doctor to admit the little man wasn’t doing the job. Hence she had no choice to take her physical needs somewhere else. She just had affairs to start with, but the guys were either too clingy or wanted a one night only thing. Don’t call us; we’ll call you kind of arrangement.

Extract from a great article by Author Jennie Nash on The Book Designer site:
My mission as a book coach is to help writers write the best books they can, which means paying attention to:
the macro elements (the story or argument the book makes)
the micro elements (the words on the page)
the emotional realities of the writing life (the habits that lead to success)
I’ve developed a series of posts to help you learn how to write one really great chapter so that you can take those lessons and apply them to all your work.

Author Beware … Publishing Predators Are Breeding…

img_7794

Article extract from Judith Briles on The Book Shepherd site:

Oh, what a tangled web they weave … publishing predators are breeding with the surge of authors now by-passing traditional publishing. Over half of books published today are by the self and indie publishers. Traditional publishers are taking notice and are now gearing up to offer their own “self-publishing” opportunities. Some, like Simon & Schuster, Hay House and Penguin, have had a “vanity press” relationship for years in place via Author Solutions (ASI). Expect to see all of this push into a higher gear–after all … there is money in wannabe author’s pockets.
It’s a never-ending story … the emails, phone calls, postings within the Author U Group on LinkedIn and my personal group on Facebook: Publishing with The Book Shepherd (join it) … and I’ve worked with several private clients and fielded numerous phone calls/emails from authors who have…

11 Ways to Overcome Marketing Dread…

Extract from a great article by Children and YA Author Beth Bacon, on Digital Book World site:
I was with a group of authors the other day when the conversation took a turn toward marketing. The group was unanimous in the declaration that they loved to write but loathed to market their work. Whether they were self-published or worked with a more traditional publishing house, whether they sold most of their titles in digital or print format, they all said the same thing: they were aware that they should participate in marketing their own books but dreaded the chore.
One of the authors said she puts off marketing tasks. Another said that marketing made him feel uncomfortable. Another proudly proclaimed herself to be an introvert, as if that made her biologically exempt from marketing.
We all laughed and nodded in sympathy, and moved on to another, more pleasant topic. But…

Great Tips For Branding Your Book Series…

Extract from an article on Book Marketing Tools Blog:
You’ve got a great business – you know your subject matter really well, and you’ve got customers that love you, because of that. Customers who keep on asking ‘Have you got a book? How can I buy more of your knowledge to help me?’ So, you’ve finally decided to write a book – wonderful!
But… you sat down to make some notes, to work out what to write…. and now you know that you’ve got so much material, you can write a series, not just one book. That’s also wonderful – but it’s also challenging – how do you make it all hang together? How do you make each book interesting (focused on just one important thing, that your customers want to know), and yet still clearly related to all of the others? How do you make that series of books…

EDITING 101: 04 – Character Name Consistency…

Originally posted as the Dun Writin’—Now Whut? series on this blog, EDITING 101 is a weekly refresher series for some of you and brand new for others.

Character Name Consistency

A book I edited had a main character with a name of, say, Paul Charleston, who was a vice president of marketing. Within the first fifty pages, the author had referred to this one character by:
Paul
Paulie
Paulie-Wallie
Mr. Charleston
Paulie C.
Mr. C.
Mr. VP
Mr. Veep
the vice president
the veep
Mr. Marketing
and probably ten others I haven’t remembered. Imagine how confused a reader would have been, as there was no discernible reason for the name changes. In addition, should the author have decided midway to change this character’s name, it would have been impossible to change them all with a simple Find/Replace operation. The risk of missing one—or more than one—was very…

EXCERPT

“Stop right there!” Eversley yelled.  “You guys better have some damn good reason for delivering items at two o’clock in the morning!  What respectable outfit drops off stuff at a warehouse at 2 AM?  Come on let’s have it –  where’s your ID?”
“Hey man, what’s your damage?” one guy uttered.
Craig shoved his badge in the guy’s face.  “This is my damage, show me yours!”
They seemed unfazed by Craig’s badge.  “So you’re cops, big deal.”  The guy showed his ID and Craig took it.
Craig held it out to me, and I shrugged.  It seemed legit, but I didn’t know the businesses around here, even with the briefing Craig gave me at the beginning of the night.  I was still kind of clueless.  I was at the bottom end of the learning curve as it were.  “Seems legit to me, sir,”  I said.
Craig handed it back to them.  “Why is there no business name on the side of your panel van, if you’re just delivering car parts.  I really do need to see inside the boxes to make sure.”
“Got a warrant?”
This guy had an attitude, but Craig showed him the standing warrant that we had.
The guy opened all four boxes, and they were indeed car parts. Craig asked, “Is that all you have to deliver tonight, fellas?”  Both men nodded, so we let them go on about their business, but stayed until the unit was locked up.
“Does anyone else use this building?”  Craig asked him.
“No, just Sanderson Bearings sir.  Now if you’ll excuse me, my shift is over, and I gotta get some shut eye.  Have a good one officers and I hope you get the men you’re after!  Too many damn drugs and stolen parts going on around here. It’s giving the neighborhood a bad name.  I’ll feel safer coming out here late at night when you catch the drug dealers.”
“Have you seen the drug dealers?”  I inquired.
“Yeah, I was here the other night doing inventory when a lady got stopped by those two cops.  They didn’t look like cops.  At least not like you guys.  They didn’t see us, but I saw them, plain as day from the window.”
“What were they wearing?”  Craig was taking notes, as the two men spoke.
“Suits, you know like the freebies would wear,” the younger man mentioned.
“They roughed her up pretty badly.”
Craig thought a minute.  “Could you describe them to the police downtown?  You’d be really helping out a lot if you did.  That lady that got roughed up wasn’t a drug dealer.”
“Was she a narc?  In any case, if she wasn’t a drug dealer, of course, we’ll help out!”
“Thanks, guys, I really appreciate it.  Here’s my card.  He also handed the guy a five dollar Timmy’s card as thanks for his cooperation.  Now go home and get some sleep and buy yourselves a double- double in the morning before you report to the police station.”
The guys thanked us and got in their van and drove away.
“I spoke up.  What was all that about?”
“When Kristen was arrested, two people dressed like they described, were here in the middle of the night.  They had all the right ID that said they were internal affairs.  I don’t think that’s the case at all.  Now I know my former partner has been set up.  I bet they’re part of the same drug gang.  I also smell the stench of Langley all over this!”
“So do ya think those two blokes were on the up and up, not blowing smoke up our arses?”
“I think they were legit Holmes. If they were guilty of anything at all, they would have tried to run.  I searched the boxes, and it was all car parts like he said. I’d still like to get a look inside, but we’d need to justify the search.”
I still wasn’t convinced being a natural skeptic, but Eversley appeared to believe the two men.
The rest of the shift was uneventful. Dawn came around, and our two replacements knocked on the window of the unmarked.  I was more than ready for eight hours of solid slumber.
