An Excerpt from “The Binding” by Samantha Jacobey

“What in God’s name!” she exclaimed, stepping back quickly and calling behind her, “Madeline! Who’s been in here?”
Exchanging a glance with Mr. Monroe, the receptionist scurried through the opening between the counter and wall and followed him towards his panic-stricken daughter. : No one,” she stated confidently, moving past her and freezing at the sight of piles of papers, books, and decorations strewn about the small space. Her mouth falling open, she gasped, “How did this happen?”
“Don’t touch anything,” Garrett warned, reaching out to grasp the arm of the woman in front of him. Pulling gently, he guided her out into the hall. “Go and call the police, right no.” His upper lip twitched, his emotions getting the better of him for a moment.
Alone with him, Meri squeezed her mother’s small keychain in her hand, recalling coming to that very place many times as a child. Her mother had volunteered to head the small food pantry that the church ran when she had been a toddler, and for over twenty years, it had been the only job Ezamay Monroe had ever had.
Staring through the opening at the mess of strewn belongings, Meredith felt anything but nostalgic. “Wh did this, daddy?” she whimpered with a dimpled chin, reaching for his shoulder to lean on.
“I don’t know baby,” he wrapped her protectively, hesitating only for a brief moment before confessing. “I’m afraid I haven’t been completely honest with you.”
