John saw movement to his far left and he turned to see an owl landing on a boulder not far from him. It was an odd looking owl because the glowing blue ring around its face. Then he remembered France’s blue-ringed owl. It was incredible to see! And it’s looking directly at him. It lets out a loud ear-piercing shree scream that wakes some of the others. Only Mark came out of his tent. “Wow! What was that?” Mark said as he slowly walked up to John. “That thing’s noisy.” Dave, Phil and Paul came out to see what the commotion was. “Look at that!” Paul said. “Is that the owl France told us about?” “Yes,” John said. It looked at John again and screams even louder, extending its wings this time. The men cover their ears which only muffles the owls cry a little. “I can’t help but feel something’s wrong,” John said taking a slow step closer to the owl. “I just woke up feeling…something.” Mark looked at John and wondered if it’s because he’s not eating or sleeping that good. Then the owl let out another scream and flew down the river toward France’s camp. Phil, Paul and Dave decided to go back to sleep and headed for their tents. Mark’s worried about John said, “Why don’t you get the sat phone and give them a call. That way you’ll know they’re OK.” “Good idea. Hopefully the satellite is in the area,” John said and headed back to the netting to get the phone. When he returned he tried several times, unsuccessfully. This made him even more unnerved. “It’s not working,” frustrated, he turned to Mark, “It’s not working!” “Let me try,” Mark took the phone from him and tried to call. He also got nothing from France’s camp, so he tried the call the authorities. He got through with some static on the line. “Hello, I’m trying to reach France Hunter’s group, but I’m not getting through. Has anyone from there tried to call for help?”
