“House On Butcher Harbor” by Lisa Lewis Moon
“Charles I can’t hear you. Can you speak to me?” He came closer to the table. His mouth moved, but she still could not hear a sound. “Please Charles, I can’t hear you. Can you speak to me so I can hear you?”
“She will kill me if I tell on her,” the man said, looking around the room nervously. Everyone turned to look at Ethan. Charles’ words had come from Ethan’s mouth. Ethan stared dead ahead as if he were in a trance.
“She already has killed you, Charles. You are dead now. She stabbed you thirty-seven times!” Claire told him, not sure why this was happening, but not wanting to stop.
“Yes, she went crazy, started to accuse me of sleeping with the grocer’s wife. Then it was the milk man’s wife. Soon she accused me of sleeping with every woman in town.” Ethan said. Everyone stared at Ethan except for Claire. She watched the ghost of Charles Coldburn.
“Were you having an affair?”
“Never, Edith was my world.” Grace squeezed Claire’s hand. “What would give her the idea that you were sleeping around on her?” Grace squeezed her hand harder. Claire looked at her to see what was the matter.
“It was the house. Like with me,” she looked at Quince and Vincent in turn. They seemed to agree with her.
“What are you talking about?”
“When I was here last I got very jealous of you,” Grace’s cheeks turned red. “When Dogg brought you back from the beach, I got really pissed off. Mad about him and about Julian. They all seemed to be drawn to you. And I was jealous of all the time I had spent taking care of you. Don’t get me wrong. I loved taking care of you, but when I was here last, it drove me crazy. I could have killed you myself if I had stayed around here much longer.”
Claire stared at her friend as if she was the one insane, yet the temperature continued to drop. She must be on the right track.
“I think it was the house. I think maybe it got to her and made her think he was sleeping”
